BayREN Home+

Bay Area Regional Energy Network

Open
Worth
Up to $2,000
Applies to
Ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-splits
Status
Accepting projects — budget runs in cycles

Roughly $1,500 for a single-zone ductless system and up to $2,000 for multi-zone or ducted heat pump installations. Home+ runs on annual budget cycles and the dollar figures shift between cycles, so confirm the current amount before you count on it. Work generally has to be performed by a participating contractor and documented for the program.

Federal Tax Credit (25C)

IRS — Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit

Open
Worth
30% of project cost, subject to annual caps
Applies to
Qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps and HVAC equipment
Status
Available through 2032

A tax credit rather than an up-front rebate: it reduces what you owe when you file, and it stacks with the state and regional rebates above. The credit is 30% of qualifying costs but is subject to annual dollar caps that differ by equipment type, and the equipment has to meet specific efficiency tiers. Confirm the current cap and your own eligibility with a tax professional — we install equipment, we do not give tax advice.

Fully reserved statewide since February 2026

We install the equipment — we do not administer these programs and we cannot guarantee any homeowner qualifies. Treat the amounts above as a starting point for a conversation, verify with the administrator, and talk to a tax professional about anything on the credit side.

Rebate Questions

Can I combine more than one rebate?

Usually yes. Regional programs like BayREN and utility programs like MCE are generally stackable with each other and with the federal tax credit, since they come from different sources. Two programs drawing on the same state funding pot often cannot be combined. Confirm with each administrator before you count on a combined total.

Do I have to use a specific contractor to qualify?

Most programs require a participating or licensed contractor and program-specific documentation submitted with the job. We are licensed under CSLB #1107541 and will tell you plainly whether a given program is one we can file paperwork for before you commit to anything.

Is a rebate the same as a tax credit?

No, and the difference matters for budgeting. A rebate reduces what you pay, at or near the time of the job. A tax credit reduces what you owe the IRS when you file, which can be months later, and only helps to the extent you have tax liability.

Why do these programs keep running out of money?

They are funded in fixed cycles rather than as open entitlements. When demand exceeds the budget for a cycle, the program stops taking reservations and moves applicants to a waitlist. Two of the largest California programs did exactly this in the last year, which is why we date this page and tell you to verify before planning around any number here.

Most of these programs are written around heat pumps specifically. If you are weighing that against a straight furnace replacement, the heat pump page covers what the equipment actually does, and the furnace installation page covers when a furnace is still the better call.
